Call of Duty, one of the most recognizable franchises in gaming has released their next chapter in their games lineage. Developed by Infinity Ward (MW2,MW3; Treyarch does Black Ops and Black Ops 2), the game was expected to be released as MW4, but it ended up being Ghosts; Forging a new story, new characters, and addition of military dog. Call of Duty Ghosts was expected to break new records set by Black Ops 2 and Grand Theft Auto V. That didn’t happen.
Activision has placed the blame on new systems (XBOX One and PS4) being released as to why they haven’t sold very well; Completely ignoring that Battlefield 4 is selling very, very well. One reason, in my opinion, that it isn’t selling very well is it isn’t really an advancement. It has been rumored is that people can be tired of Call of Duty, that Activision shoving it down our throats is the reason that sales has been lackluster.
The current video game market is flooded with first person shooters, that seems to be the most sought after game style by developers and distributors. But could you blame them? It sells. Every game besides of Call of Duty Ghosts has had amazing sales. So let’s look into the reason it could possibly fail. This is purely opinionated.
1. Exhaustion - If one thing that is guaranteed, it is Call of Duty is going to release a game every year. This is possible due to Activision splitting up the responsibility between 2 companies, Treyarch and Infinity Ward. Buying a repetitive $60 game every year can wear on you. Though I do spend much more money than that on games, but divulging so much money in a game only to buy another game the next year from the same franchise and company, makes you feel like you wasted the last bit of money. Maybe spreading out more time may be worth it.
2. Advancement - Take Modern Warfare 2 and compare it to Ghosts. What can you say are the real differences? The Dogs? little change to the graphics? Subtle environmental damage? That is about it. Even Though Battlefield had almost all of these in Battlefield 3 (except the dogs). So technically Call of Duty is behind. Battlefield has a lot more environmental damage, larger graphical enhancement (not a huge deal, but is nice) and they corrected some class issues.
3. Flooded Market - When you have so many games, so alike. Games get casted aside for the preferred choice. Many Call of Duty fans jumped to Battlefield frustrated with the same game being released year after year. Plus, there is Killzone, Halo, Battlefield, 007, Call of Duty, and many many more out there. Even Medal of Honor has games released from years before EA decided to drop the franchise.
So in end, I think Activision has some work to do to separate itself in the first person gaming genre to separate itself. They do need some advancement and correct some of its issues with gameplay in Ghosts, and spread out the time between releases.
